History

In the years of World War II many men and women of the Parish enlisted for service in the armed forces. During 1942 word came that the current Rector, the Rev. M.K. Jones had been taken prisoner at the fall of Singapore and was interned in the Changi P.O.W. Camp. However, he returned to Australia and later became the Dean of Armidale in 1949.

The years of the 1950’s and 60’s were a particularly fruitful time and saw much ministry and many activities commence…
At that time there were more than 450 children enlisted in Sunday School and the Kindergarten.

Also during this time:
• New pews were installed
• A substantial amount of money was given to charities.
• A special Ministry Fund was established
• Five organised groups were formed to help the community

In 1954 Miss Florence Barker retired from teaching Sunday School after 40 years of service. In 1953 the current organ was installed. New pipes were combined with suitable old pipes from the first organ installed in the original building. It was widely agreed a new church hall was needed for all the various activities. It was resolved after long debate, that the old hall (the origin church building) should be pulled down and a new modern hall built in its place.
